A little Geek in a big city.
I decided that if I stayed home I would probably be bored out of my mind, so I packed my camera, PDA and Mp3 player, got the word for "Downtown" from Carey and hopped in a taxi to explore. I ate at Mcdonalds for the first time since I was here too. You can order a BigMac just like in the states, it's translated phontetically, but unfortunately I wasn't able to figure out what the hell they call a "Quarter pounder with cheese" here. I doubt it was "Royale with Cheese" though.
Downtown Daejon is where people from the mid-twenty/high school set come to waste time and shop. Instead of one big mall, it's an absolutely insame amount of small stores crammed on top of each other in a 5+ block square, all trying to get a piece of your expendable income. They have arcades, shoe stores, and even Popeye's chicken (it's a tendy place here, go figure).
I did the rounds, hitting a few arcades looking for some bizzare games. I saw a game that was sort of like Qix, except when you cleared parts of the board it showed anime babes in compromising positions, and it had Engrish too boot! I also took a picture of the first game I have ever seen with a can of bug spray as the controller. That's gonna be in the next picture set.
I also was on a quest to find a record store that has music that I would actually like to listen to. Most of the music stores around me are a mess of Korean boy bands, Abba, and the entire collective works of "Color me Badd". While the one I found downtown still carried the collective works of some crappy, crappy bands, I was able to snag a copy of the Gorillaz album and 25 Cd-R's. I picked up some reading material (Carl Sagan's "Contact") from a bookstore with the largest english paperback section I have found so far. Most of the books available are novelizations of crappy movies like "Titan A.E." or "The Southern Attorney that takes on the Multinational Firm" books by Grisham. Koreans of all ages are big on graphic novels, aka comics printed in book format, and I have yet to see or hear about any kind of Library here either for other kinds of more serious books.
Having spent most of my money, I hopped back in a Taxi, got stuck in rush hour, and eventually returned to write this post. Tonight I am going over to Marc and Carey's place to celebrate a birthday.
