Bored. So very very bored.
Today is one of those times where, if you were to ask me to talk about a subject, and I'd be willing to talk about it, but I'll be damned if I could think of something to profound myself. Everybody knows that anyone with a website has to enjoy hearing the sound of their own "voice", because the web can be the ultimate soapbox for anyone with too much free time (me) and a lot of opinions they are willing to share (also me I guess). Does that mean that people will flock to web crooners, just because they have something to say? Hell no.
Look at any run of the mill Geocities site. Unless it is being mocked by a site like Something Awful there is a relatively high degree of probablity that no one will ever read it. Maybe a friend will give it a token reload every odd day until they forget about it, but on average, geocities pages are saw by the person writing it, and nearly no one else (exceptions being kiddie warez sites, stupid emulation pages, and pr0n of course).
Why do these people do it? Is it to polish their internet skills to become dot-com'ers?? Maybe, if you think the marquee tag is a really nifty thing and think animated .gifs are a gift from your nondetermined religious based system of beliefs, but I doubt it. So why are these people spewing out sites that rationally get no attention and aren't technically impressive?
Because there is a little pride and arrogance to be felt when you "have a website" or can call yourself "webmaster". It's not "webmaster" for nothing now is it? Sure, your site might suck, but dammit, your MASTER of your small portion of webspace. You determine how many comet cursors you can cram into that site, and just which shade of neon green goes well with your red font.
Ok, I just discussed why I think the average person runs a site, so why do I think I do it? One, it's because it helps me practice my writing skills now that my hobby of "mocking movies in chat rooms" has ceased to be due to a time difference, but there is more to it. I like having a place to post innane thoughts I have, and also because it gives me something to do creatively with my time. There is a pride element there too. While this might not be the best damn site ever, I never claimed it would be, and I enjoy what I am doing, and I think that is what matters.
Since I have a webcounter, I happen to know there are actual people dropping in to this site. For this I am very grateful. I have to admire the sort of determination it takes to plod through MOUNDS of text that I post on a frequent enough (?) basis. Truly, feedback and the sight of a new comment being posted makes me smile every time. I'm even willing to ignore the fact that no one ever uses the Karma thing. >=0)
All in all, this rambling post was, I hope, semi-worth your time to read. Thank you for coming. I'll try to have something for you next time too. I'm gonna go grab a beer.
