Yeah, so...I guess it's good.

I watched Insomnia, the latest Christopher Nolan film. I was interested in seeing it since I loved Memento so much. I couldn't find a copy until today. It wasn't that I was actively searching for it, but when I saw it on the shelf I knew what I was picking up to kill some time after work.

I normally don't like to write about a movie right after watching because it takes me a few days to chew on it if my initial impression was positive. If it holds up to some deeper sort of critique, or has me thinking about it after a few days, it was probably a good film. If I'm mocking it as I watch it the first time, or walk out with a bad taste in my mouth, I won't likely come around to it.

With that being said, my verdict on Insomnia is mixed. It was good, but not Memento good. Not even close. The subtle work of Memento wasn't present to any real degree, everything was very superficial, yet interesting in a shallow "I could have figured all of this out without having to tell me directly" sort of way. Considering I was entertained by a cop drama does mean it scores some points for an interesting set up and execution. The acting was good. The execution was there. The concept and plot...a little weak.

Hardly a review to bank money on a purchase of a DVD, but it didn't suck as a rental. I wanted it to be much better than it was.

Perhaps my next review will be more decisive. I need to talk about something I have a strong opinion on...like dryer lint.
