I’ve been playing Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup off and on for at least a year or two at this point. I recently bragged a bit about getting slightly better my consistently not dying in the extremely early bit of the game. I started to actually expand into different kinds of characters and try out new builds and different combinations. After years of playing roguelikes of assorted kinds, I actually achieved a small milestone. I captured my first ever “Rune of Zot”.

You need three “Runes of Zot” to enter the dungeon levels of Zot, where the Orb of Zot resides. Getting the Orb of Zot back to the surface is the actual goal of the game, but I won’t ever kid myself into thinking I’ll get there. However, I actually saw multiple sections of the dungeon (A first), built a successful hybrid character (Also a first), and took a rune. I’m probably never going to beat this game, but it’s a start! While it’s taken me a year or more of playing Crawl to get anywhere, it’s taken me even longer to fill up a Subway sandwich card I’ve had in my wallet.

I’ve had that damn card for at least three years! I got it on my first trip in the store, and I just now finished it. I walked into Subway expecting to need to buy just one more sandwich to get a single six inch sandwich for free, but I totally scored an entire free twelve inch sub for filling up my card. It only took three years of trips in the spring and summer every other month or so to eventually fill up my card. Now that we have a kick ass park in that direction from the house to hang out and walk around in after purchasing sandwiches, I can see my next card being filled up more quickly. It remains the only place in Korea that has access to turkey, and occasionally I go through withdraw.

I’ve known my wife for five years, and today also happened to be the first time she’s ever watched an episode of Futurama with me. We were about to take a nap. I was sleeping off the excess turkey sandwich from the trip to Subway, and resting from the long walk around the park where I overheated myself and Yoshi. I took off the headphones from my Cowon O2 and let the back speaker play so we could both watch. She will watch the Simpsons with me when it’s subtitled, but she watched Futurama without Korean. She doesn’t have much background in the scifi tropes of the show, but hey, better than watching some Korean drama if I had the option.

I’m sure this week (or the next) will be filled with other life altering milestones, but this was a pretty big day for a simple guy like myself that likes to play games, watch geeky television shows, and eat a good sandwich.
