Efficiency makes me hot.
Korean life December 20th. 2009, 9:11pmWe’ve been running the heater non-stop for the past few weeks. This is opposed to last year, when the heater was out of our control. Last year the central heating system almost never ran when we wanted it to and left us very unsatisfied. While having control over the heater when we are out of the house is nice, I can’t stand running the heater all day long while I am in the house if I don’t feel warm/
We have control of our heater, but we don’t have a warm house! In the morning our bedroom will be warm enough for a light comforter, but the rest of the house requires a sweater, sweat pants, and heavy socks to stay warm. The bill at the end of the month certainly makes it seem like there was a lot of heating going on, but we weren’t really seeing the benefit of it. We can control the amount of heat each room gets, but it felt like we were burning money to keep the living room warm. Without a warm living room, no other room with an open door was above chilly most of the time.
My wife went shopping today for some stuff she needed when cooking, and when she returned she brought with her some weather stripping. Weather stripping the cracks and seams between the windows and doors is something we’ve never done before, but there was no reason why we never tried it before. It was extremely simple to do, and the difference it made to the cold air coming in the house is noticeable immediately.
We put the strips around some inside doors, and we also got some for outside windows too. I enjoy putting it up and cutting it to length to fit in the cracks. I get a big grin on my face thinking about the potential savings to our heating bill and the warm house we’ll have when it is completed. It’s totally something my dad would do too. We had lots of cold winters in our old home, and he would lay down insulation and whatnot to keep us from freezing all the time. My house isn’t nearly as hard to keep up as his 100+ year old two story farm house, but if we can get away with going bare foot in the living room without freezing I’ll be happy.
