Off the top of my head?
Teaching February 4th. 2010, 10:15pmMy third class of the morning was entertaining itself with some geometry puzzles before the class started. They claimed they had some “MENSA” qualifying puzzles for me. They were of the “cut shape X following these rules to get X result” or “Draw X shape X amount of times without overlapping or picking up your pencil.” I suck at those. While I needed to be shown the solutions to their very clever puzzles, I offered a few of my own to keep some of the students. In response, one student posited a riddle that stumped the rest of class. I was able to work it out, but it was very good.
I had a few rebus puzzles memorized from some of my other classes, but off the top of my head I could only remember around ten of them. That’s not bad, but I knew I had more I could do tomorrow if I could find them. I left my paper with the best list I found on the Internet in the other office. Several of the students were very good at the Rebus style puzzles, so I had to move on to some other word puzzles at the end of class once we completed the book work. One student knew one of my favorite puzzles before I even had it set up, and I vowed to find some good puzzles to stump them all.
I’m more than happy to do something fun in class if they are willing to do something when I cover my material in class once they get their brains fired up. I think I’ll expand my puzzle day with the other classes as well to get them thinking, then work on discussing the book a little later, if at all. I don’t have a pressure to finish the book, but I do want them to have a little fun in the class before the camp ends. Sadly I’m going to miss their dinner party due to another class, so I won’t get another free meal and get to hang out with them again.
