Ah, I forgot the lesson of Seinfeld. I'll simply tell the unpopular restaurant to serve beans and hot dogs! Problem solved!

This story reminds me of the Seinfeld episode with Babu Bat and his "Dream Cafe."

Try not to think about the disappointment you are causing the family restaurant owners. They look out the window and see Mr. and Mrs. Torgo walking down the street, their eyes brighten, knowing that you will dine with them. But what's this? Mr. and Mrs. Torgo are stopping, they are going into Nolboo instead. The pain is too much and family restaurant owner man must turn away. He orders the wait staff out of the dining room, so no one sees him cry.

"They said you was hungboo."
"And they way right."

Sorry, couldn't resist.

But seriously. Supporting the family place is only a moral issue if they are being unfairly pushed out of the market. This usually means that the food is good but they can't compete on price because of certain advantages the chains have. If the food is mediocre then that's that. You shouldn't feel guilty...even if you are now just a cog in the agricultural-industrial consumption machine >:)
