I kick my boyfriend and the dog out when I want to clean the house too. It's just easier. Mostly cause Autumn likes to play in dust piles as I sweep, bark at the vaccuum, follow me from room to room laying in the middle of the floor as I dust, and if I'm mopping the floor I have to put her in one room with the baby gate, mop the other rooms, wait for them to dry, then let her out of the room and block her in the rest of the house, mop the last room, and take the gate down when it's finally dry too or I end up with paw prints in my clean floors.
I wish I had advise about the barking, but Autumn doesn't seem to bark when we're not home. We've had a guy in this week refinishing our hardwood floors upstairs and he said she's been quiet all the times he's been here, and running sanders and pounding away upstairs too. She likes to sit at the front window and bark out the window at anyone on the sidewalk. We're actually at this point trying to get her to "speak" on command, so when she does it, we can tell her "no speak". Otherwise, I don't know. It is VERY difficult to reward the absence of negative behavior. Good luck with that!
