I think it applies on a certain Pharisaical level. There are those who obsess about the rules and obligations with no sight toward the ultimate end for which they exist. The purpose of religion is not to fill up your time or prevent you from spending time on things (though religious practice often has these side effects). For me, at least, my religious practice is about bringing me into union with God, the ultimate end of life, the ultimate good. Do I get "fanatical" about it sometimes...probably, I'm only human. But that is never my purpose. Religion = fanboyism…never seen that comparison before. I think it applies on a certain Pharisaical level.
