I got the urge to play Gamma World after the rhinoceros episode of  Caustic Soda, in which someone mentioned an old random character they played that was “Part man, Part rhinocerous, all vampire, Rhinopheratu”, which is the most succinct way to explain why Gamma World is hilarious.

After asking around, a few people were interested in playing something fun but not too taxing, but I decided that rather than a campaign, stats, and all that dice rolling, we should stick to the same chaotic style of game, Wiz-war. One of my buddies has the game sitting in his house, and it had been ages since we last played it. He offered to bring it to the card shop to play a few games, and we got it set up before a tournament.

The game with three players took a lot more time than with two, and we had to recall a lot of the rules as we went and check how things worked. If we played more frequently, I’m sure the rustiness would go away and we’d be able to play faster. There were more people interested after they watched us play while they waited for the tourney. It was still as crazy as ever, with lots of crazy spells being played and countered.

It took a while, but I emerged once again as the champion by simply murdering the other two wizards in a dramatic fashion. It was pretty fun just to lob fireballs at them, and not nearly as difficult as trying to haul their treasures back to my base after the location got switched.

We also got to play some EDH, make some trades, and I got to reconnect to a friend I hadn’t seen in months. It was a very good day, but it went on too long and I needed to rush home as a result. Anyway, I only have a few days a fun left this year, with my paper and my classes eating into my free time. I can’t always get away, but it was fun today.
