We got invited to a game night party by a couple my wife and I are friends with last night. They mentioned the game Scene it? which I had never heard of before. We had been meaning to meet up and certainly needed to get out of the house on a Saturday night for once, so we took the subway and got ready.

On the way to the party, we had a pretty strange experience. We were in a new neighborhood, and needed directions. An woman walked by, so we stopped her and asked the location of the landmark we were looking for. She apologized and said in Korean, “I don’t know. I’m also a foreigner!”

She certainly looked as if she was Korean. Oddly enough, when she spoke, she didn’t really address my wife. She was looking at me, as if she wanted to speak to me and explain in another language, but spoke broken Korean instead. Weird.

Anyway, we found out where we were headed with no difficulties and met up with the group of people heading to the party. We had met some of them before at previous parties. It turns out that Scene it? is a game combining a DVD and a board game. You’d land on some questions, answer trivia, or watch a short DVD clip and answer a question based on what you’d seen. The answers varied from nearly impossible, to dead simple. Since you never knew what they’d be asking, the room would get quiet as the film rolled, then when people saw the question they’d be shouting.

We had a great time. People were talking trash. In the two games our team won, I answered the final two questions correctly. Two of the other people playing had such encyclopedic knowledge of films that they weren’t allowed to play together. Watching them work was just scary.

I pulled out some obscure answers from movies I saw growing up, but I’ve got a large deficiency of knowledge when it comes to actual “good” movies. That’s what a life of heckling bad movies as a hobby gets you. If they came out with a “video game” or “Mst3k” edition of the board, it would be awesome. Someone suggested there needed to be a “Geek” edition, and I totally agree. Make it more of a fusion of topics that appeal to those people tired of memorizing Trivial Pursuit questions.

The entire event kicked off around eight o’clock, and we didn’t done with the games until late in the evening. We had a lot of fun, because there were other couples there we could chat with for once. Finding couples that have been here a while and are mellow like we are has been a bit of a challenge I have to admit.
Right now I’m a bit sleepy from staying up nearly all night, but it was a great time. Once I get a few more games for the Wii, and a few more controllers, I’ll have to invite people over for a different kind of gaming night.
