Whirlwind of cleanliness.
Korean life July 8th. 2008, 10:00pmThe movers came today at 8 AM. They were a finely tuned machine of packing, shipping, and movement. When you hire someone to work for you in your home, you want to at least pretend you are useful and needed. This was one of those times where anything you did just got in the way, so it’s best you just stand back and watch them work. I got put on the duty to cart various valuables and odds and ends over the the new apartment. I probably made the trip down the block six or more times stashing the bikes, the dogs, or some of my wife’s traditional Korean paper art.
They loaded everything in the shipping truck in two and a half hours, and were at the new apartment unloading quickly after that. They wanted to get our house done before lunch. They were finished moving all the stuff back into the house by 12:30. We had to set up the computer, put some books in the proper place, and rearrange the rooms details, but they had the entire room set up basically as fast as humanly possible. It was pretty awesome. In an ironic twist, they had also moved out the previous tenants and knew how their rooms were set up too, so we could ask them advice about our arragement as well.
Right now, we’ve got a few things left to do before the house is offically finished. One of the tiles in the laundry room hadn’t been done correctly, and the lower floor had water damage. The previous owner is paying for that floor to be relaid, so we’ve got drying cement in our laundry room and no washing machine set up. We had water rot on two bathroom doors, so we’ll have those replaced. It was supposed to happen today, but I guess it fell through.
The Internet guy came earlier, and he had his hands full. The Internet tube in my room is clogged, so he had to make a spare tube and run a cable to the living room’s plug. He got that working, but couldn’t verify the speed using Linux. Oops, someone didn’t learn anything about computers in his training program. He didn’t know how to use the proprietary Windows Active X plugin from his company’s website to check my speed, so he installed a second Internet adaptor to my machine, then checked that board with a portable laptop. Whatever, my wife couldn’t explain what he was doing, and she can’t use the computer very well either. Anyway, four hours later, he left with the Internet working, so I’m happy.
The time after work was devoted to hooking up the computer, placing all my trinkets back on my desk in proper order, and setting up a few odds and ends in my room. Tomorrow is the air conditioner. I can’t believe we had considered not buying an air conditioner. I had to take several showers each day for the entire weekend today because I was covered in sweat from work in the house.
