After a long drought of D&D related gaming, my group got together for our next round of adventures. I guess the first few adventures of any particular campaign are to get to know the other players, to level up, and to get people comfortable with the mechanics and world. Seeing as the setting has been established, and we’ve got our little band of adventurers building their reputation through the world, this session the gloves came off, and I was given more of a center stage role.
The best part of this entire session was whenever anything epic happened in the story, the weather outside acted as if it was part of the DM’s story. We got trapped in a giant fortress, surrounded by Non-zombie things trying to eat party, and suddenly a rain storm started. There was no hint of rain when we arrived to play, but suddenly it was rainy and dark.I was hacking and slashing my way through the horde as we accomplished our goal. I decapitated a cleric in one shot, potentially saving the day. It was great.
The rain built in intensity as we fought an miasma causing evil giant fish, culminating with a battle between party members as I tried to find out information about my past before the monster was put down.
Things only got bigger and better. When our party’s mysterious benefactor revealed his true identity as a Prince of Hell, literally AS he said the words revealing himself, lightning struck and a thunder rolled across the city. It was like his voice caused this booming thunder outside, just like any horror movie. It was fantastic to find out we had suspected to in the story the entire time. The atmosphere with the rain and thunder just really made it that much better.
My Warforged character’s little creative quirk, something I threw in with the intention of being developed later when we got around to it got revealed today. The DM’s idea about where to take the character means that I’ll have to step up my role in the party and make some hard choices. I didn’t have an idea for developing my character before today, but now I’ve got all sorts of ideas to explore. I want to get more familiar with the background materials so that I can explore his ideas more fully.
There were times where I was at a loss as to what to do, because I’m not sure if something I would do would lead to my demise or not. I’ve got a purpose and goal to extend my character that will be rather epic if things continue down this path. Some of it was the DM’s idea, but I picked an item as a reward for the quest that got built into the story now and will completely change my character. I’ll be having this epic struggle from within as part of my body belongs to a legendary god-like figure for my race, and it might fight for control of my body when it grows in power.Hell, I could end up leading an entire army if I can get enough parts to recreate this being and take his place. How awesome is that? To think that the story could switch scope to something that large and encompassing is very daunting.
I’m so excited to play D&D. I’ve never really understood tabletop gaming before now, but man, it was really awesome to play a game where I felt like the choices I made could affect more than just a party, but have an effect on the entire world they exist in. The other characters have their own secrets that we’ll probably expore too, and the story is getting bigger and more awesome every time we meet. We’ve got assassins on our trail, mysterious demons, and all sorts of cool new abilities to use since we leveled up.
Can’t wait to play again.
